Balestier Bak Kut Teh @ ION Orchard

Balestier Bak Kut Teh is a mini restaurant at Food Opera, B4 of ION Orchard.

The bf and I decided to proceed for dinner at this place as we were a) running out of ideas for dinner, and b) there's seats even on this crowded New Year's Day holiday. We were ushered quickly to an empty table, which by the way, were plenty despite being rush hour for dinner.

Chinese national waitresses were over-zealous. They didn't even give us any time to read the menu before rushing us to place our orders. Oh yes, do not attempt to take photos of the menu unless you want to get hollered at, in broken English. I got that from first hand experience when I was trying to take a picture of the menu's cover, which I initially thought was quite unique in design.

With undue stress from the waitress to order fast, we ordered the 2 person set menu ($18.80) which consist of a bowl of rice each, braised pig trotters, pork rib soup, salted veggies and water chestnut drinks (which they were out and replaced with lime juice or lemon barley drink). We also ordered additional Yu Tiao ($1.30).

Though I haven't tasted a lot of Bak Kut Teh, this is by far the WORST! There's barely any meat on the 3 pieces of puny ribs. As for the soup, I could taste nothing but pepper. There's no richness of pork taste at all.

As for the braised trotters, the meat was too tender, to the point it was mushy. Again, there was barely any meat - mostly fat and an enormous chunk of bone, and these were floating in oil and the gravy tasted only of soy sauce.

When it was time to pay, the cashier didn't even bother to inform me how much it would cost, but just waved the receipt at me as though swatting a fly. I consider that to be immensely rude.

Horrible service + substandard food. Don't bother with this place.
