Thai Dinner @ Ah Loy Thai

I've been wanting to visit Ah Loy Thai Restaurant after reading consistent good reviews at Hungry Go Where. Today, I finally managed to drag the bf to for dinner there.

Ah Loy Thai sits in a corner at the 1st floor of Shaw Tower. The place was rather cramped as the focus is on squeezing as many people as possible into the available space.

We ordered the Glass Noodles, Phat Thai, Mango Chicken, Tom Yum Soup and the much raved Butter Calamari.

The Glass Noodles ($6.50) was delish! The dish was generous with ingredients such as silver sprouts, fried egg and prawns. The noodles itself was of the right texture, not too soggy, and infused with the sweetness of seafood.

The Mango Chicken ($5.30) was a dish of fried chicken served with a tangy sweet sauce. The slices of mango that accompanied the dish seemed green so the bf and I didn't touch it. The chicken itself was fried to a crisp. Decent, but nothing to shout about.

On the other hand, the Butter Calamari ($7.50) was the highlight of the meal. Just smelling it, the buttery aroma is enough to make my mouth water. The calamari was done just right, without being rubbery. The batter was light and crispy.

The Tom Yum Soup ($6.90) from Ah Loy is a pot of red hot fury. It was served with a generous portions of squid, prawns and straw mushrooms and the various herb and spices. The soup had the right balance of tanginess to it, but was a tad too spicy for me.

Served last was the Phad Thai ($5.90). I didn't taste it as I was too full at this point, but the bf did mention that it wasn't fantastic.

The visit to Ah Loy left us really stuffed. On hindsight, I think we really over-ordered!

In all, the restaurant is value for money and definitely one that I'll revisit when the craving for Thai food comes calling.
